Arts

Aquinas offers a comprehensive cultural program, giving your son multiple opportunities to learn, grow and perform.

Whether it’s musical or classical theatre productions, visual arts, dance, choir, rock, jazz or big bands, studying the Arts promotes teamwork, communication skills, discipline, commitment and creativity – all essential skills in the modern workforce.

Our art and design courses teach students to appreciate the visual world around them, challenging them to think creatively about visual issues and to communicate their ideas through a variety of media; such as drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, media and computer studies. Ongoing exhibitions offer students the opportunity to showcase individual creativity and achievements.

Drama is offered as part of the curriculum. The annual drama production is one of the most anticipated events on the school calendar and boys have the opportunity to be involved as actors, managers, stagehands and audio/lighting technicians.

Music plays a key role at Aquinas. A large number of students participate in the instrumental program through individual tuition and their involvement in one or more of the College’s ensembles.

Junior School

Music is an integral part of the Aquinas Arts and Culture portfolio. Students in Junior School can learn an instrument and perform in the choir, bands or ensembles. Highly skilled and trained staff teach the students each week, enabling the boys to perform at Mass, assemblies, functions and participate in a range of events and competitions.

All students in Year 4 learn either the violin or cello. The instrumental program provides each boy with the opportunity to explore the fundamental concepts of music in a practical and dynamic environment.

Middle School

There are a variety of musical options at Aquinas College to cater for individual differences. From ensembles and bands to the Middle School Choir, boys are offered the opportunity to learn musical theory and perform in a range of settings and competitions across the school year.

Middle School students can also develop their skills on stage in the annual Middle School Production. Students participate in auditions, rehearsals and performances as part of the annual musical production. They learn roles, lyrics and choreography as they prepare for the community show. The boys are encouraged to take part as cast or crew members to develop and broaden their skills.

Visual art is another aspect of the Aquinas College Middle School Arts program. Boys learn key aspects of a range of artistic styles and techniques across the Visual Arts curriculum - including painting, product design, sculpture, metal and wood work and more - and have the opportunity to showcase their work in the College’s annual Art Exhibition, as well as enter other external art competitions throughout the year.

Senior School

Participation in Aquinas College Arts programs - including Visual Art, Drama and Music - enables boys to develop confidence and self-pride through their dedication to learning, creating, rehearsing and showcasing their talents.

Senior School students are offered a range of opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills in music theory and performance across the senior years. We encourage students to pursue their interests and provide a diverse range of music options to cater for a variety of tastes and interests, including choirs, ensembles and rock bands. Students rehearse and perform throughout the year, showcasing their skills at many public performances and competitions.

The stage is not only reserved for musical performances at Aquinas College though. Students can also take part in Drama studies and be part of the annual Senior School Production. Preparations for the musical production begin at the start of the year, with students auditioning for roles and rehearsing lines, songs and dance moves in the months leading up to performances. The dedicated preparation by cast, crew, staff and volunteers culminates in the annual sell-out performances.

Visual Arts learning at Aquinas College enables senior students to further develop their creative capabilities, design artworks for assessment and exhibition and delve into art theory to further build their artistic skills.

The College offers many opportunities for students to exhibit their works both on campus and in the local community. From taking part in the College’s annual Art Exhibition or Photography Competition to exhibiting in state-wide art competitions, students are encouraged to display their artistic talents to diverse audiences throughout the school year.
